Guided tour of the Conciergerie in Paris.
It is on the island of the City and the heart of power, that the Capetians built this Palace. The only surviving remnant this extraordinary preserved vestige of time; the Conciergerie. The palace was gradually abandoned, and it was Louis the BON who entrusted it to a high official, who became the concierge of the Palace. This building is a remarkable testimony to the civil architecture of the fourteenth century with the Salle des Gens d’Armes, the Salle des Gardes and the kitchens. Almost all of the lower level of the palace was transformed into a prison in the 15th century. It is there that Marie-Antoinette, so disliked by the French, will stay until her execution on the scaffold, the expiatory chapel dedicated to her memory and which was the location of her prison.
The prison was used during the great works of Haussmann, which reshaped the Ile de la Cité. The Conciergerie became a museum and opened its doors to the public in 1864.
